What is Root Canal Treatment?

A normal filling is root canal treatment. Root canal treatment is designed to eliminate bacteria from the infected root canal, prevent reinfection of the tooth and save the natural tooth. When one undergoes a root canal, the inflamed or infected pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned and disinfected, then filled and sealed. Root canal treatment or endodontic treatment is necessary when the center part within the tooth, known as the pulp, housing the blood vessels, nerves, and living connective tissues, becomes infected or inflamed. The root canal procedure is performed to save a damaged or badly infected tooth, instead of extracting it. This procedure is performed by an endodontist or a root canal specialist.

Before going through the treatment first, we should know the layers of the tooth, commonly human teeth have three layers that are,

  1. Enamel
  2. Dentin
  3. Pulp

The first layer is an Enamel. It was non-vein and non-blood flow. It looked like a marble stone. This tough shell is the hardest tissue in the human body. Enamel covers the crown which is the part of the tooth that’s visible outside of the gums.

The Center layer is called Dentin. The dentin looks a Yellow color. Also, the dentin part has lots of blood flow and vein supply. That part of the tooth is beneath enamel and cementum. It contains microscopic tubules (small hollow tubes or canals). When dentin loses its protective covering (enamel), the tubules allow heat and cold or acidic, or sticky foods to stimulate the nerves and cells inside the tooth, causing sensitivity.

And finally, the last layer is called the pulp. The pulp is a mass of connective tissue that resides within the center of the tooth, directly beneath the layer of dentin. Referred to as part of the “dentin-pulp” complex, and also known as the endodontic, these two issues are closely interrelated and dependent on each other’s development and survival.
